Overview

Don Bosco High School, Matunga is an all-boys day school affiliated with the Maharashtra Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education. The school offers education from kindergarten to class X.

The school traces its origin to the Catholic Educational Institute which was established by the Salesians of Don Bosco in Tardeo, Bombay in 1928. The school was housed in a rented building called “Tardeo Castle”. In 1937, the general council of Salesians of Don Bosco approved a plan to buy 60,000 square yards land in Matunga from the Bombay Municipal Corporation.

The Corporation approved the sale on July 16, 1937. The Don Bosco High School moved from the rented premises at Tardeo to the new Don Bosco campus at Matunga and the school was officially inaugurated on January 31, 1942.

Campus

The school campus boasts spacious well-ventilated classrooms with classes V-X rooms equipped with interactive white boards. The library hosts various educational, inspirational, sports and entertainment books besides World books, American encyclopedias, biographies, classics, fiction and non-fiction. There is a special section for geographical materials like maps, globes etc.

There are two computer labs with 60 computers and physics, chemistry and biology labs.

The school campus also hosts a cafeteria, a gymnasium and a conference hall with state-of-the-art audiovisual facilities. The Shrine of Don Bosco’s Madonna, which is located in the school campus at Matunga, was opened on August 5, 1957.

Sports facilities include three football pitches, hockey pitch, two basketball courts, roller skating rink and a tennis court in addition to a park with slides, swings, tunnels and jungle gym for pre-primary students.

Academics

The school isaffiliated with the Maharashtra Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education.

Preprimary section: A child-focused activity-based curriculum is followed. Children are encouraged to participate in dance and music to develop their creative abilities. Activities such as paper tearing, crumpling and sticking, stringing beads, sorting, matching, playing with touch cards and similar activities are conducted to help students improve their handwriting. An in-house occupational therapist helps children with difficulties in motor development

Special days like Sandwich Day, Pet Day, Family Day, Healthy Food Day, Transport Day etc., are organised. All national and religious festivals are celebrated in the school to inculcate patriotism and tolerance for other religions.

Children are evaluated throughout the year and parents are informed about the child’s progress through meetings with the teacher. Special attention is given to children who are unable to cope and remedial classes are conducted towards the end of the year.

The school organizes field trips to gardens, supermarkets and bus depots as part of the learning process.

Primary section: The primary section follows a competency-based syllabus to increase the element of fun and enjoyment for children. The syllabus aims to develop the cognitive, affective, psychomotor and social skills of students. Value-based education is imparted through inspirational videos and lectures.

Secondary section: Particular attention is paid to students of class 10. Students who need extra attention and mentoring are short-listed and steps are taken to ensure their academic progress. The school also uses a learner-centric approach to education, where each child is encouraged to study at his own pace, using the specially-created computer programmes for English, mathematics, science, history and geography

The cyber library at Don Bosco offers students and teachers an array of books and periodicals, along with the ETC (education through computers) programme with the help of LCD projectors and software like Paintbrush and Flash. Internet facility is also available and students can browse for additional information on subjects of their choice.

Don Bosco High School, Matunga is ranked among the top 10 boys day schools in India by the EducationWorld India School Rankings 2020-21.

The school received the First Runner’s up prize at the Green School Campaign Awards ceremony, held on 27th February 2021 via the Google meet organized by the Greenline team.
