Overview

Mater Dei Institution was founded on July 12, 1909 by Anacleto F.X.Lobo, one of the eminent advocates of English education in Goa. The second oldest English medium school in the state, the school started as St. Mary’s in 1900 and was later named as Mater Dei in 1909. It was initially recognized by the Bombay University in 1918, then by the Poona S.S.C. Board in 1949 and later obtained affiliation from the Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (GBSHSE).

The school received its official charter from the Lisbon Scout Association on December 3, 1926,the first ever in Goa. Subsequently in 1992, the school introduced the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) curriculum, considering modern day challenges and requisites for international concurrence.

The school maintains a healthy teacher-student ratio of 1:10 and each class has a maximum of 30 students, thus facilitating enhanced learning.

Says a school spokesperson, “We focus more on creativity, creative and critical thinking and molding the personality and individual strengths of a student to make him or her, a confident global citizen.”

Campus

Sited in the classic Saligao town in Bardez, Mater Dei offers a quintessential Goan ambience amidst a verdant backdrop. The school hosts essential facilities for outdoor games with huge playgrounds for volleyball, basketball and football, a badminton court, table tennis room and open fields and park for recreational play.

The school offers modern laboratories for computer studies and science, a well stocked library and reading room, facilities for art and craft, music, drama and dance. It also provides school bus facility to safely ferry students between school and home.

Academics

Mater Dei is affiliated with CISCE and offers classes from pre-primary to class X. The school aims to “provide world-class education that is contemporary and relevant for the future as well”. It boasts 100 percent pass results in board examinations and a sizeable number of students acquire distinctions and first class ranks. Equal emphasis is placed on extra-curricular activities and students regularly participate in inter-school, state, national and international level competitions.

Fees:

Admission fee (non-refundable) at Mater Dei is Rs 6000 and the monthly tuition fee from KG onwards is about Rs 1500.

Achievement

The school boasts 100 percent pass results in board examinations and a sizeable number of students acquire distinctions and first class ranks. The Mater Dei Scouts troop and Guide group, i.e. the Junior Red Cross, are the oldest in Goa. The school is ranked among the finest in the state, being the second oldest English medium school there.
