Overview

Calcutta Girls High School (CGHS), sited at Princep Street in Kolkata is a K-12 English medium girls school affiliated to the CISCE (Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations), New Delhi. The school was founded in 1856 under the patronage of the then Governor General of India, Lord Canning. It was initially supported by the Evangelical denominations of the city; subsequently in 1877 the management of the school was handed over to Bishop J.M.Thoburn of the Methodist Episcopal Church.

The school is now owned and managed by the Methodist Church in India and is under the supervision of the Calcutta Christian School Society and a local managing committee headed by the Bishop of the Bengal Regional Conference as chairman.

The school aims to “provide high quality education at an affordable cost”. The school is recognized by the Deputy Director of Secondary Education (Anglo Indian Schools) West Bengal. 

Campus

Calcutta Girls High School is a partly residential school with hostel facility available on campus. The school houses well-ventilated classrooms, well stocked libraries and well equipped labs for physics, chemistry and biology.

Academics

CGHS is affiliated to CISCE and prepares students for the ICSE (Indian Certificate of Secondary Education) and ISC (Indian School Certificate) examinations at the end of class X and class XII respectively. The compulsory subjects in class X are English (first language), Bengali or Hindi (second langauge), environmental education, history, geography, mathematics, science or commercial studies or environmental science. The optional subjects are home science / commercial application.

According to the requirements of the Council, internal assessments are conducted for all subjects. CGHS offers Commerce, Humanities and Science streams at the senior secondary level.

Transport facilitiesare available for the children through the school’s own transport system.

Extracurricular:

Co-curricular activities include music (vocal and instrumental), sports as well as clubs for drama, sports, art and craft, know your city club, dramatics, musical appreciation club, piano club, and library club to name a few. Annual concert is an important event of the school.

Achievement

Calcutta Girls High School was the first school in Kolkata to have a high school section for girls. Students from this school are regular winners at singing competitions.
