TheBangalore Institute of Technology (BIT) is an autonomous, co-educational college affiliated with the Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), Belgaum, and approved by the Delhi-based All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). Located in the heart of Bangalore, BIT (estb. 1979) is one of 24 institutions promoted by the Bangalore-based Vokkaligara Sangha (a registered society founded in year 1906 to promote the social, cultural and education aspirations of the agricultural community, the Vokkaligaras). BIT offers nine undergraduate, six postgraduate and doctoral level courses to 2,500 students through its 14 departments. The college also offers IGNOU (Indira Gandhi National Open University) courses. The institute's Placement and Training Centre serves as a link between students and industry by organizing seminars, technical workshops, personality development programmes, internship programmes, etc. Some of the top companies which have hired BIT graduates are Cap Gemini, Accenture, Bluestar InfoTech, DGB Microsystem, Caritor, EMC2, and Infosys.
Bangalore Institute of Technology (BIT) is located on K.R. Road in central Bangalore. It shares the campus with other education institutions including VS Dental College, VV Puram College of Science, College of Law and hostels. BIT classrooms, library and labs are spacious and well-equipped. The BIT campus is Wi-Fi enabled. A central library housed in a two-storied building boasts 30,000 volumes of textbooks and reference books, subscription to 820 e-journals and 90 print journals (Indian as well as international), a separate audio-visual section, access to digital resources and other such facilities. The college also has an Industrial Consultancy and Research Centre. Other facilities include a 1,200-seater auditorium, seminar hall, co-operative society, canteen, full-fledged sports and cultural sections as well as hostels for boys and girls.
BIT is known for its research programmes. A number of research centres on campus are conducting inter-disciplinary research. Moreover the institute is engaged in collaborative research programmes with premier education institutions such as the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. The Department of Chemistry, BIT has been recognised as one of the leading research centres in the state of Karnataka.
