Overview

The Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute (BMCRI) was started as a private medical college in 1955 by the Mysore Education Society (MES). The founders of MES were Dr. R. Shivaram, Dr. Mekhri, Dr. B.K. Narayana Rao and Dr. B.V. Ramaswamy. In 1957 it was handed over to the then government of Mysore and was affiliated with Mysore University and later with Bangalore University. It was built by civil engineer and architect Mr. V. Ramamoorthy, who completed construction of the campus in a record time of six months. BMCRI was affiliated with the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences in 1996 and was granted autonomous status by the government of Karnataka in 2006. It is the only government medical college in Karnataka. Bangalore Medical College & Research Institute has a century old associated teaching hospital – the Victoria Hospital established in 1906. Similarly equally recognized teaching hospitals such as Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital, Vanivilas Hospital, Institute of Ophthalmology, and Venkateswara Institute of ENT are attached as teaching hospitals to the medical college.

Campus

Spread over 200 acres, the BMCRI campus includes the academic block, hospitals, library, hostels, student lounge, food court, gymnasium, a basketball court, volleyball court, cricket field etc. The campus is WiFi-enabled. The 2,270 square feet Library and Information Centre is spread over two floors with provision for textbooks section, reference section, stock area, archives area, periodical section, dissertation section, audio/video section, reprographic section, computer workstation with internet facility and access to e-resources, librarian office and technical section and book reading area. The library has a collection of 34,008 books, 107 journals, 7035 back volumes, 2200 dissertations, 120 audio/video cassettes, 250 e-Journals, 155 e-books and 200 WHO Collections. The computer center was fully refurbished over a year ago, and offers internet connectivity. The college library is linked to National Medical Library, New Delhi through computer and has access to latest journals via e-mail. This is the only Medical College in the State to have this facility. The Clinical Skills Centre on the BMCRI campus was inaugurated by Sri Ramadass SA, minister for medical education, Karnataka on November 17, 2011. The centre was set up at a cost of Rs.95 lakh with donations from the alumni,Infosys foundation and GMR Varalakshmi foundation. The centre offers hands-on training in Microsurgery techniques applicable in various super specialties like laparoscopic surgery, neurosurgery, plastic surgery, ENT surgery and ophthalmology.

Admission

For undergraduate course Candidates are selected on basis of performance in the Karnataka-Common Entrance Test (http://cet.kar.nic.in/) exam. 85 % of seats are filled through the CET while 15 % through an all-India exam. 50 % of seats are reserved for SC, ST and OBCs. For postgraduate courses 50% of seats are filled through the State Entrance Examination conducted by the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences and 50 percent of seats will be filled up by the All India Entrance Examination conducted by Director General of Health Services, (Medical Examination Cell) New Delhi on merit basis. Admission into M.Ch/DM courses is through postgraduate entrance exams conducted by RGUHS. Additional details may be obtained from RGUHS (http://www.rguhs.ac.in) Paramedical Courses These courses are filled through the paramedical board through state level counseling of eligible candidates with SSLC or equivalent qualification for certificate courses and Plus II or equivalent for diploma courses. Diploma Courses Admission into MD/MS/Diploma courses is through postgraduate entrance exam conducted by RGUHS (50% from RGUHS and remaining from All India quota). Nursing Courses These seats are filled by RGUHS.

Achievement

BMCRI was granted autonomous status by the Government of Karnataka in 2006. It is the only college in Karnataka to be electronically linked to National Medical Library, New Delhi through and enjoys access to latest journals via e-mail.

Accommodation

The college does not provide hostels on its campus. The undergraduate men's hostel is located near Central College, Bangalore and the women's undergraduate hostel is located on the campus of Vani Vilas Women's and Children's Hospital. The postgraduate hostel is located in Chamarajpet.
