Bengal: 300000+ candidates to take Teacher Eligibility Test on December 24

December 20, 2023

The West Bengal Board of Primary Education announced on Tuesday that the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) scheduled for December 24 is expected to have over 3 lakh candidates. Goutam Paul, the board president, assured that arrangements are in place at 743 centers across the state, including five in Kolkata, for the smooth conduct of the exam.

Despite requests from BJP MP Dilip Ghosh and another individual to change the exam date due to the Bhagavad Gita chant program attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the same day, the Calcutta High Court declined the plea. The court stated that authorities would ensure examinees face no disruptions in reaching the centers.

Education Minister Bratya Basu affirmed that TET would proceed as scheduled. The West Bengal Board of Primary Education is conducting TET for the second consecutive year to fill over 10,000 vacancies. The annual examination, initiated in December 2022 after a five-year hiatus, aims to expedite the recruitment process. The 2014 TET faced controversy, leading to a CBI investigation ordered by the Calcutta High Court. Last year, nearly seven lakh candidates took the TET, held after the 2017 examination.
