Bharathiar University, Coimbatore was founded in 1982 by the Government of Tamil Nadu under the provision of the Bharathiar University Act, 1981.The Postgraduate Centre of the University of Madras, which was functioning in Coimbatore before 1982 formed the core of the Bharathiar University. Named after the great national poet Subramania Bharathi, Bharathiar University was recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) in May 1985. The university boasts 104 affiliated institutions of 80 are arts and science colleges, 29 are colleges of education, eight management institutions, one Air Force administration college and one college of physical education. The university’s motto is “Educate to Elevate” and its aim is to participate in the task of inculcating necessary knowledge, skills, creative attitudes and values among the youth of the country to contribute more effectively towards establishing an equitable social, economic and secular ideal of our nation.

LabsApplication forms and prospectus can be obtained from the registrar’s office in person or by post from mid April for Rs.300/- (Rs.150/- for SC/ST candidates) in the form of a DD drawn in favour of the "Registrar, Bharathiar University payable at Coimbatore" and self addressed stamped envelope to the value of Rs.60/-. Cash payments will not be accepted. Candidates can also apply online or download the application form from the website and submit the filled-in application with required fee of Rs.300/- (for others) and Rs.150/- (for SC/ST Candidates). Admission by Entrance Test: The university conducts an entrance test at its campus and selection is based on performance in the test and in the qualifying examination (UG) up to V Semester / II year. Direct Admission: Spot admission is done on submission of application on first come first served basis. MBA admissions are done through centralised counseling conducted by Anna University, Chennai. (Based on TANCET marks). MCA admissions are done on the basis of TANCET marks and a separate test conducted by the Department of Computer Applications, Bharathiar University, Coimbatore. Bharathiar University was recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) in 1985 and reaccredited with Grade A by the NAAC. The university has been ranked No. 3 in the state and No. 29 in India by Nielsen survey of 2011.
