January 2, 2024

The Bihar Education Department is set to take strict action against government teachers offering private tuition, following complaints of such practices. In a letter to district magistrates, Education Department Additional Chief Secretary K K Pathak called for written undertakings from coaching centers, prohibiting government school teachers from conducting classes in these establishments. Any violation will result in severe departmental and legal consequences for both the teachers and the coaching institutes. The department also instructed district education officers to promptly provide details of such teachers to headquarters. Additionally, the letter emphasized the need to ensure teacher presence

The department is taking decisive action against government teachers involved in private tuition, responding to complaints about this practice. The Education Department’s Additional Chief Secretary, KK Pathak, issued a directive to district magistrates, urging them to obtain written assurances from coaching centers that government school teachers will not conduct classes in these establishments.

In cases of non-compliance, the department plans to enforce rigorous departmental actions against the teachers and initiate legal proceedings against the implicated private coaching institutes. To strengthen oversight, district education officers have been instructed to promptly furnish details of such teachers to the department’s headquarters.

Furthermore, the letter emphasizes the crucial role of teachers during the upcoming Bihar School Examination Board exams, scheduled to commence on January 10 for classes 10 and 12. It advocates ensuring teacher presence in schools where they are posted during the examination period and limits granting leave during board exams to no more than 10% of the total teachers in a school at any given time.

The stringent measures align with the state education department’s broader efforts to instill diligence in its officials. This includes directives for district magistrates to conduct inspections of all schools at least twice a week and immediate salary deductions for absentee teachers. These monitoring initiatives have been in effect since July 1 of the previous year.

In a related context, a recent report compiled by the education department reveals that Bihar has a total of 12,761 registered private coaching institutes, catering to 9,95,533 students. This data underscores the significance of enforcing regulations to maintain the integrity of the education system.

Despite attempts to obtain comments from Education Minister Chandra Shekhar on this matter, he was not available. The proactive approach of the Bihar Education Department signifies a commitment to enhancing the quality and credibility of education in the state.
