BITS Law School Launches CRISP: Pioneering Innovation Law in India

BITS Law School Launches Centre for Research on Innovation Law for Shared Prosperity fellowship

June 3, 2025

BITS Law School has launched the Centre for Research on Innovation Law for Shared Prosperity (CRISP) at its Mumbai campus, marking a major step in advancing legal scholarship at the intersection of technology and innovation.

The launch featured the inaugural conference of the Innovation Law & Policy Fellowship, focused on Standard Essential Patents (SEPs)—key to technologies like 5G, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. The event included thought-provoking presentations and panels with leaders from the judiciary, government, academia, and industry.

“Legal frameworks must ensure innovation serves both India and the Global South,” said Dr. Ashish Bharadwaj, Founding Dean of BITS Law School. Justice Amit Bansal of the Delhi High Court emphasized that SEP regimes should foster access, not act as barriers.

The Innovation Law & Policy Fellowship is open to scholars, lawyers, and students working at the nexus of law, tech, and policy. Fellows receive mentorship, resources, and a stipend, culminating in an international conference in early 2026.

Key speakers included:

  • Dr. Unnat Pandit (CGPDTM)

  • Rajesh Kumar Pathak (Bharat 6G Alliance)

  • Industry leaders from Qualcomm, Ericsson, Nokia, Philips, Dolby, and more

CRISP aims to:

  • Build legal research capacity in innovation law

  • Educate industry and academic stakeholders

  • Build a new generation of legal innovators

  • Equip BITSLAW students with cutting-edge legal expertise
