The Brihan Maharashtra College of Commerce (BMCC) was established in 1943 by the Deccan Education Society to provide leadership and trained manpower in the field of commerce and business as the nation stood on the threshold of independence. The Late Shri. C. G. Agashe, Managing Agent of the Brihan Maharashtra Sugar Syndicate Limited, was instrumental in getting a donation of Rs. 2 lakh from the Syndicate to start the college. Hence, the college was named the Brihan Maharashtra College of Commerce. BMCC was conferred the 'Best College Award' by the Pune University in February 2002, under its Quality Improvement Program. It was also accorded the status of 'College with Potential for Excellence' (CPE) by the UGC and re-accredited with Grade A by the NAAC.
