Calcutta HC reserves order on Abhishek Banerjee’s appeal in school jobs scam & ED summons

October 6, 2023

The Calcutta High Court has reserved its decision regarding an appeal filed by Abhishek Banerjee, a Trinamool Congress MP, in response to a summons issued by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with an alleged teaching jobs scandal.

During the hearing, the court emphasized that Banerjee should provide the requested documents to the ED by October 10. The court also suggested that if the ED finds Banerjee’s responses unsatisfactory, they may issue another summons either on October 19 or after October 26, taking into consideration the intervening Durga Puja festival.

The court stressed the importance of the ED concluding the investigation into the school jobs case within a reasonable timeframe. Banerjee had previously been summoned to appear on October 3 but was unable to do so due to prior commitments in New Delhi. A fresh summons for October 9 has been issued by the agency.

In August, the ED conducted raids related to the school jobs case at the Leaps and Bounds office, where Banerjee is identified as the CEO.
