Overview

Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata, often referred to as Calcutta Medical College, was established in 1835 as Medical College, Bengal as the first college of European medicine in Asia by Lord William Bentinck. It has been functioning for the past two centuries and is today the best example of a heritage medical college besides bagging a place among the top 25 medical colleges in India. The purpose of establishing this college was to train the native Indian youth in the principles and practices of medical science followed in Europe. Medical College, Bengal was established on 28 January 1835, and was soon followed by Madras Medical College on 2 February 1835. The hospital associated with the college is one of the largest hospitals in Kolkata and houses several specialty and super-specialty departments. Till 2002 admission batch, the college was under the affiliation of the University of Calcutta. Now it is formally affiliated with the newly established West Bengal University of Health Sciences. The college and hospital are funded and managed by the Government of West Bengal.

The campus hosts a well stocked library, well equipped laboratories, a canteen and student hostels. The hospital has a number of separate specialty and super-specialty departments.
