Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University came into being after the upgradation of King George's Medical College into a university by an Act passed by Government of Uttar Pradesh on September 16, 2002. King George's Medical College was established in 1911 when His Majesty King George V and Queen Mary visited India. Initially, the faculty comprised five professors and two lecturers and was affiliated to Allahabad University. The first hospital associated with medical college was built in 1914, and was called King George Hospital, funded by the Government of India. In between 1981 to 1992 the medical college and hospital were taken over by the state government and all administrative control was maintained by the government instead of Lucknow University. A major milestone in the history of the institution was is its upgradation to the Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University which came about by an Act passed on 16 September 2002 by the government of Uttar Pradesh under chief minister Mayawati. In December 2003, on the request of alumni and teachers, its historical name was restored and the new university came to be known as the King George Medical University. However, in 2007, with the return of Mayawati as chief minister, the institution was again renamed as Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University.
