Initially started as the University of Cochin in 1971 by the Government of Kerala with the objective of development of higher education with emphasis on post-graduate studies and research in applied science, technology, industry and commerce, the University of Cochin was reorganised as Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) in February 1986. With the reorganisation, its new objective was promotion of graduate and post graduate studies and advanced research in applied science, technology, industry, commerce, management and social sciences. The university offers specialised courses in Naval Architecture, Polymer Science and Rubber Technology, Photonics, Marine Sciences, Safety and Fire Engineering, Marine Engineering etc. apart from a host of traditional science and engineering courses. The university’s motto is ‘Tejaswinavadhitamastu’ meaning may the wisdom accrued deify us both-the teacher and the taught and percolate to the universe in its totality’ which is taken from the Vedas, and which well epitomises the ideals and philosophy of the university.
The university hosts three separate campuses, two in Cochin and one at Pulinkunnoo, Alleppey. The main campus at South Kalamassery is spread over 180 acres and houses academic departments, the administrative office, the university library, students amenity centre, student hostels and staff quarters besides other support services. The Lakeside Campus houses the Department of Marine Sciences alongside a hostel for men students. The Pulinkunnoo Campus in Kuttanad is home to the Cochin University College of Engineering, Kuttanad (CUCEK).
