A number of useful apps provide children opportunity to develop their interest in computer coding through a range of age-appropriate activities, games and projects. PW shortlists four selected coding learning apps for children – Kiran Balimane ScratchJr Age group: 5-7 years Platform: iOS, Android, web ScratchJr is an introductory coding app designed for children aged five-seven years. Available on iOS and Android platforms, it enables children to learn coding and programming concepts through colorful, interactive stories and games. Children can use a simple drag-and-drop interface to create animations and interactive projects that stimulate creativity and problem-solving skills. ScratchJr is a great foundation for future computer science learning. Tynker: Coding for kids Age group: 7-13 years Platform: iOS, Android, web Tynker is a comprehensive coding learning platform customised for children aged seven-13. It offers interactive coding courses, creative projects, and challenges to teach programming skills in an enjoyable and engaging manner. With Tynker, children can learn coding fundamentals, develop problem-solving abilities, and create their own games, animations, and apps. The platform introduces children to programming languages and its USP is that it can adapt to children’s varying skill levels, making it suitable for beginners and advanced learners. Hopscotch Age group: 8-16 years Platform: iOS The highlight of this app is that it enables children to devise their own games, animations, and interactive projects. Available exclusively on iOS, it uses a visual programming language to introduce coding concepts and help children develop essential computational thinking skills. Children will love its user-friendly interface and vast library of coding blocks. This app also encourages experimentation and collaboration with peers through a supportive community in which young coders can share their creations and learn from each other. Swift Playgrounds Age group: 10 years and above Platform: iOS Swift Playgrounds is an immersive coding app developed by Apple to teach programming using Swift, its patented programming language. Available on iOS devices, Swift Playgrounds offer interactive lessons and challenges that introduce children to the fundamentals of coding. Designed for children aged ten years and above, the app provides hands-on learning experiences, encouraging children to write codes, solve puzzles, and create their own programmes.
