COVA offers financial grant to Hyderabad school teachers affected by COVID

September 10, 2020

School teachers are among the most affected segments due to the lockdown. Many did not receive their salaries since March, and might not receive any at least until August 2020. Some teachers will get their salaries only when the schools reopen. This would mean spending 6 months without any salary. Experts say economic recession and job losses can be further expected. With a sense of middle-class dignity, they cannot reach out for credit or help.

On the other hand, there are high chances that many students (especially first-generation learners from poor families) may be forced to drop out of schools. Confederation of Voluntary Association (COVA) has come up with a unique plan to help both segments with a Rs. 10,000 grants to each teacher, from selected small private schools in the old city area, as part of their salary. For every teacher supported by COVA, the school allows 2 students to study free for a year. Bright students from challenging backgrounds who are most vulnerable to dropping out will be selected. It is estimated that at least 35 students at each school can be saved from dropping out through this project.

Mazhar Hussain, Executive Director of COVA said This innovative project is a win-win arrangement for teachers, students, management and society. Since we are working with schools on various projects from so many years, we want to help educational institutions sustain during COVID period.”

COVA works with 100 private schools in Hyderabad. The Support Program started in the 1st week of April 2020 and so far around 750 teachers have been supported. Through the fundraising campaign with Milaap, COVA wants to raise Rs. 25 Lakhs to support additional 250 teachers from 15 schools. This campaign will also ensure the continuation of schooling for 500 students. Overall the organisation is planning to support 1500 teachers from the old city of Hyderabad.
