Create a glowing deep sea scene

The underwater world is a treasure house of flora and fauna. Hundreds of corals, fish and other creatures of various sizes, shapes and hues inhabit this last unexplored frontier. Here is a way to replicate the wonder of the deep sea by making a glowing underwater night scene.

Create a glowing deep sea sceneThings you need

  • Cardboard box
  • Scissors/paper cutter
  • Serial lights
  • Clay in different colours
  • Stickers/pictures of different fish
  • Pebbles
  • Seashells
  • Sand
  • Twine/nylon thread
  • Compass

Method

  1. Cut out a rectangle from the side of the box — this is the side that will be displayed.
  2. Make a hole at the back and place the serial lights along the bottom of the box.
  3. Paint the insides of the box in shades of blue.
  4. Make long rolls and design coral and underwater plants with clay of different colours. Place these at the bottom, and hide the lights behind them.
  5. Pour sand to cover the bottom of the box.
  6. Place pebbles and shells on the sand.
  7. Stick pictures of fish on the cardboard, and make a hole on them with the compass. Then run twine through them and tie a knot.
  8. Use the compass to make holes on the top of the box. Pass the other end of the twine attached to the fish through the holes on the box and tie a few knots. Hang all the fish at different heights in the same way.
  9. Close the box firmly.
  10. Paint the front of the display side using dark blue.
  11. Now connect the serial lights and switch them on for a brilliant display!
