Delhi government forms a committee to monitor child safety in schools

March 5, 2024

Following a directive from the Delhi High Court on November 10 last year, the Delhi government has taken a significant step in enhancing student safety by establishing a dedicated Child Safety Monitoring Committee. This committee has been specifically tasked with scrutinizing the implementation of the ‘Minimum Standards of School Safety’ checklist, a comprehensive guide aimed at ensuring the utmost safety and security within educational institutions.

In accordance with this initiative, a recent circular from the Directorate of Education has been issued, instructing the heads of all schools in Delhi to diligently fill out the prescribed checklist. This proactive measure is intended to facilitate smooth inspections by a dedicated team, aligned with the court’s directive to assess various aspects of schools, including classrooms and toilets.

Furthermore, the circular emphasizes the pivotal role of deputy directors of education (districts) in ensuring the efficacy of these safety inspections. Specifically, they are instructed to guarantee the presence of the relevant Deputy Director of Education (DDE) for the respective zone during the inspection of schools within their areas of jurisdiction. This strategic approach underscores the Delhi government’s commitment to upholding and prioritizing the safety standards outlined in the checklist, reinforcing a comprehensive framework for safeguarding the well-being of students across the national capital.
