Delhi High Court refuses to postpone CA exams scheduled for May

April 9, 2024

The Delhi High Court made a decision on Monday regarding the Chartered Accountants (CA) exams scheduled for May this year, refusing to postpone them despite pleas from candidates. The court rejected the request to delay the intermediate and final exams to June, which had been made by 27 CA aspirants citing the upcoming general elections. Justice C Hari Shankar dismissed the plea, stating that potential hardships faced by candidates couldn’t justify derailing an examination involving approximately 4.26 lakh people.

The court expressed surprise at the request and deemed the petition “bereft of substance.” It noted that the general elections to the Lok Sabha were scheduled for May 7 and 13, with no exams planned for May 6 and May 12. The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) defended the exam schedule, stating that rescheduling it in the second week of June would disrupt the process. The ICAI also assured that careful consideration had been given to ensure no exams coincided with polling dates.

However, the petitioners argued that the exam schedule would clash with the Lok Sabha elections, potentially violating their democratic rights if held before casting votes. Despite these claims, the court upheld its decision not to postpone the exams, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the integrity and efficiency of the examination process.
