Ethiraj College for Women was founded in 1948 by V.L. Ethiraj, with a commitment to provide quality education to women, lay strong emphasis on values and tradition and with a mission to empower women. It became autonomous in the year 1999 and is affiliated to the Madras University. The college has received a five star accreditation from NAAC and the ‘College with Potential for Excellence’ award from UGC.
Ethiraj College for Women has a campus area of 9 acres. The college facilities include gymnasium, tennis court and playground for volleyball, basketball, kho kho and cricket net. The college also has additional facilities for yoga, aerobics, karate and gymnastics.
With an area of about 32,000 square feet, the library is a three storey building with a collection of over 91,917 books, 52 print journals and over 6000 online journals. The library also has a research wing that has doctoral and M.Phil dissertations for ready reference. The conference/seminar hall is well equipped with gadgets like the LCD, OHP, television, and multimedia system.

The college also offers a large number of aided and self supporting certificate courses to its third year undergraduate students. These courses are conducted by the various departments of Ethiraj College.
Candidates for admission to the first year of the three year degree course should have passed the higher secondary certificate examination or any other equivalent thereto accepted by the Syndicate, University of Madras. All candidates should present transfer certificate in original from the institution they last attended. Candidates from other states should produce eligibility certificate from University of Madras.
Candidates from other countries should produce migration certificate and also recognition certificate from the University of Madras.
A student admitted after the beginning of a term should pay the whole fee for the term. Students who are found to have obtained admission by producing false documents will be summarily dismissed with forfeiture of all fees paid.

The college hostel has two individual blocks (PG block and UG block) and can accommodate around 500 Indian and foreign nationals and NRI students. In addition to this, the hostel has a gym, reading and recreation rooms, spacious dining halls, and telecommunication facilities. The hostels also provide a full time doctor.
