Overview

Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), New Delhi, was set up in 1920 in Aligarh and moved to Delhi only in 1925. JMI became a Central University by an Act of the Parliament in 1988 and in 1962, the University Grants Commission declared JMI Ddeemed to be University. While a course in civil engineering leading to the Bachelors in Engineering degree was offered since 1978, the Faculty of Engineering and Technology was established in 1985. The Faculty of Engineering and Technology is one of the nine faculties at JMI. It offers various courses at the graduate, postgraduate and research level aided by 200 academic staff to over 3000 students through its six departments – civil engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, electronics and communication engineering, computer engineering, and applied sciences and humanities. All courses are approved by the Delhi-based All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). The faculty also offers continuing education programs for in-service engineers leading to B. E. degree in civil, electrical, mechanical, electronics and communications, and computer engineering. There is a full-fledged training and placement office for the benefit of students, which facilitates their placement in reputed multinational companies every year.

Campus

Faculty of Engineering and Technology offers its students all the centralized facilities of the university such as access to the Ansari Health Centre, sports complex, dental services, and the university library. Especially for the students of this faculty, there is a modern faculty library equipped with e-learning tools, a consortium of INDEST and INFLIBNET, and a large collection of text and reference books. A centralized computer laboratory with more than 100 terminals is available to students in addition to similar laboratories available in each department. The future developmental plans of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology include introduction of new undergraduate and postgraduate programs in emerging areas, complete automation of the examination system, modernization and automation of the library, creation of a Wi-Fi campus, development of smart classrooms, and introduction of course credit-transfer arrangements with institutions in India and abroad.

Academics

The Faculty of Engineering and Technology, JMI, offers undergraduate programmesleading to the B.Tech degree in the following fields: Civil Engineering Mechanical Engineering Electrical Engineering Computer Engineering Electronics & Communication Engineering The duration of all other UG courses is 4 years with 8 semesters. All UG programmes are approved by the AICTE. The following postgraduate (M.Tech/ M.Sc degree) programmes are offered here: Environmental Sciences and Engineering Earthquake Engineering Electrical Power Systems Management Control and Instrumentation System Mechanical Engineering – with specialization in Thermal Engineering, Production and Industrial Engineering, and Machine Design Electronics The duration for these courses is two years. The University Polytechnic offers regular and part-time (evening) courses leading to diploma in civil, electrical, mechanical, electronics and communications, and computer engineering. Research programs leading to Ph.D degree are also offered by all the departments. Extra-curricular activities JMI University campus has well-maintained fields and courts for different games and sports such as badminton, cricket,football, hockey, basketball, table tennis, boxing, handball, athletics and shooting. A separate department of physical education and sports is dedicated towards developing sports, recreational and leisure activities for students. Dance, music, theatre, photography and other cultural activities are promoted in the college along with academic excellence.

Admission to Faculty of Engineering and Technology, JMI is through entrance tests.

Achievement

A significant number of alumni of the institute have been serving in the Indian Administrative Services, Indian Police Services and other allied services. A large number of alumni have proven their entrepreneurship skills in setting up successful enterprises. Many alumni are working as faculty and consultants in reputed institutes and organizations in India and abroad.

Accommodation

Separate hostels are available for boys, girls and international students, equipped with reading room, television room and other recreational facilities. Residential arrangements are also available for faculty members.
