FIR filed for Maratha quota activist’s rally time violation

December 5, 2023

The police in Maharashtra’s Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district have taken legal action against six organizers of a rally led by Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange for violating the permissible time limit, as disclosed by an official on Tuesday.

The organizers had formally sought permission from the police for conducting Jarange’s rally in Kannad city on December 2, with the scheduled start at 6 pm and an intended conclusion by 10 pm. However, it came to light in the FIR registered on Sunday that the rally began at 11 pm and extended until 12.40 am the next day, thus infringing upon the approved time frame.

Furthermore, the unauthorized use of loudspeakers during the event contributed to a disturbance for nearby residents, exacerbating the violation. The case has been registered against the six organizers under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 188 (disobeying a lawful order given by a public servant), 268 (public nuisance), and 291 (continuance of nuisance after injunction to discontinue). Additionally, provisions of the Maharashtra Police Act have been invoked, as confirmed by an official.

Manoj Jarange has been actively touring various regions of Maharashtra to advocate for the Maratha community’s reservation rights. Following the Kannad rally, he visited Jalgaon and Buldhana districts on Monday. As part of his ongoing tour, he is scheduled to stay in Hingoli district on Tuesday night after engaging with Maratha community members in Akola and Washim districts, according to an organizer’s release.
