Overview

The Government College of Technology (GCT), Coimbatore, formerly known as the Arthur Hope College of Technology, was founded in June 1945 in accordance with the general policy of the then Government of Madras to give high priority to technical education under the post-war reconstruction scheme in order to meet the demand for trained engineers for various industrial development projects in the state and the rest of India. The main building of the college was formally inaugurated by Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, the then vice president of India on October 8, 1959. The syllabus for engineering studies was eventually revised and the five-year semester system was introduced from the academic year 1968 – 69. GCT is reckoned among the top three engineering colleges in the state of Tamil Nadu and among the top 25 engineering colleges in India, excluding the IITs. Over 200 companies visit the campus every year for recruitment drive.

Campus

GCT is sited on a 111 acre campus Thadagam Road, Coimbatore. The college auditorium has a seating capacity of about 850. It is equipped with 35 mm projector and a wide screen, which is utilized for screening pictures. The college has a 100Mbps leased internet connectivity supported with high speed Pentium D personal computers. The campus houses a post office which offers all postal facilities and a State Bank of India branch with 24 hours ATM facility. The college also provides transport facility for the students. The college hosts a well resourced library with excellent facilities featuring a collection of more than one lakh technical books, reports, standards and back volume of journals. The library subscribes to 89 printed periodicals and more than 500 e-journals holding of 25493 bound volumes.
