GRE Data Shows Indian Students Prefer Physical Sciences Over Engineering for Master’s and PhD Programs in the US

April 24, 2023

According to recently released data from the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), Indian students are showing a growing preference for pursuing Master’s and PhD degrees in Physical Sciences rather than Engineering in the United States.

The data indicates that in the 2020-2021 academic year, Indian students accounted for 54% of all GRE test-takers in the Physical Sciences category, compared to just 41% in the Engineering category. This marks a significant shift from previous years, where Engineering had been the preferred discipline among Indian students.

Experts believe that this trend may be attributed to several factors, including the growing demand for skilled professionals in fields such as physics, chemistry, and mathematics, as well as a growing interest in interdisciplinary research and innovation.

Furthermore, the COVID-19 pandemic has also played a role in shaping this trend, with many students looking to pursue opportunities in fields that offer more stability and job security, such as academia and research.

The data also reveals that Indian students continue to be a significant force in the US higher education system, accounting for the largest group of international students pursuing higher education in the country.

The growing preference for Physical Sciences over Engineering is likely to have significant implications for the US economy and its scientific research capabilities, as Indian students have historically made significant contributions to these areas.

Overall, this trend signals a shift in the priorities and interests of Indian students, as they seek to pursue higher education opportunities that align with their career aspirations and personal interests.
