Gujarat: Graduates offered better salary packages than postgraduates

In a placement drive organised by the Gujarat government recently, graduates with degrees in arts, science, commerce, engineering and business administration were offered higher pay packages than those with master degrees in the same disciplines.

Graduates of BA, BSc, BCom, BE and BBA degrees grabbed the highest packages of Rs 6 lakh per annum. While pharmacy graduates were offered the lowest salaries of around Rs 1.5 lakh per annum. Postgraduates in science, management, MSc, MBA, MCA and ME holders were offered a maximum pay of Rs 2.5-3 lakh per annum.

The event held from February 6 to 20 saw an attendee of 34,584 students across 30 districts from the state. Out of the total, 17,148 were selected by various companies. Principal Secretary Education Anju Sharma said, “The trend took the education department by surprise. To find out the reasons behind this, I have decided to hold a webinar with industry stakeholders.”

Students in the final year of MA were also offered a salary of Rs 6 lakh per annum while MSc and MCA students got jobs with a pay package of Rs 2.5 lakh, MBA Rs 2.4 lakh, LLB Rs 2.44 lakh, BPEd Rs 1.8 lakh and Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) Rs 2.2 lakh while postgraduate in the same (MSW) Rs 1.99 lakh.

According to data maintained by the placement cell 94,464 candidates registered for the event while only 36 percent (34,584) attended interviews.
