Gujarat: Schools receive blast threat emails, police search reveals hoax

May 6, 2024

On the eve of the Lok Sabha elections in Ahmedabad, a tense situation unfolded as 10 schools received alarming bomb threat emails on Monday. Despite the alarming nature of the threats, authorities quickly reassured the public, stating that police investigations deemed the threats to be hoaxes.

The bomb detection and disposal squad, along with canine units and Crime Branch teams, conducted meticulous searches across the schools, but found no evidence of explosives or suspicious materials. Ahmedabad City Crime Branch released a statement urging citizens not to succumb to panic, emphasizing that the threats were baseless.

Among the targeted schools were prominent institutions like DPS, Anand Niketan, Udgam School, Calorx School, Kendriya Vidyalaya, and the Army Cantonment. Despite the unsettling nature of the situation, authorities emphasized the importance of proceeding with normalcy, particularly in exercising one’s voting rights without fear. Additionally, investigations revealed that the email’s domain originated from outside India, hinting at potential foreign involvement.

This incident bore similarities to recent threats in Delhi and was seen as an attempt to disrupt the calm ahead of the elections. Education authorities, including district education officer Rohit Chaudhary, confirmed that the threats were unfounded, aimed at causing disturbances amidst the impending elections.

As polling day for 25 Lok Sabha seats in Gujarat approached, citizens were encouraged to remain vigilant yet undeterred by such scare tactics.
