Helping children remain calm in exams season

PW invited parents of Bal Bharati Public School, GRH Marg, New Delhi to share insights on how they help their children to remain calm in the exams season “Months before the exam season begins, we assist our son Jishney (class IX) in formulating a study plan that allows him enough time for revision, leisure activities and most importantly sleep. As much as we discipline our son to strictly follow the study plan, we also listen to his every concern, encourage him and affirm our belief in his abilities, without being judgemental. That there are more important things to achieve in life than only grades is a dinner table conversation we often have. We also take care to ensure a congenial stress-free environment at home” — Nancy Budhiraja, school teacher “Exam season is a stressful time for parents and children alike. I recall my childhood days when I experienced many anxious moments during the exam season. Therefore, it has always been my endeavour to help my daughter, Prabhnoor Kaur (class XII), to de-stress during study breaks by accompanying her for short walks, and ensuring she eats healthy meals and engages in activities that divert her attention from studies for a while. We also celebrate special moments with an ice cream treat or by watching a movie together” — Manmeet Kaur Pruthi, homemaker “Long hours of study preparation often result in anxiety and monotony. Therefore, to help our daughter Twisha (class XII) to remain cheerful, we ensure all our conversations prior to and during exams are light-hearted and positive. To break the monotony, we encourage Twisha to take frequent breaks and engage in creative doodling, which she loves. We also encourage her to persist with her daily exercise regimen to maintain physical fitness. Moreover, we motivate her to practice sample papers of each subject to give her self-confidence” – Shaveta Oberoi, homemaker “Since the beginning of our teenage daughter, Yuvika’s academic career, we have constantly emphasized that exam grades are not as important as the development of her all-round personality. We have always assured her of our faith in her ability to write exams confidently and fulfill her own expectations. During the exams season, we encourage her to sleep early, take frequent study breaks, and watch TV to relax. We also encourage her to attend practice sessions for sports tournaments, to stay connected to things that make her happy” – Sonia Sehgal, homemaker Facebook Twitter LinkedIn WhatsApp
