The Himachal Pradesh education department has directed all deputy directors to ensure the mandatory implementation of daily news reading during morning assemblies in government schools, following a surprise school visit by chief minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu.
During his interaction with students at Government Senior Secondary School in Baga Sarahan, Kullu, the chief minister noted a lack of general awareness among pupils and stressed the importance of integrating practical knowledge with academic learning.
In response, the department has issued guidelines aimed at enhancing students’ general knowledge, communication skills and critical thinking. School heads have been instructed to provide both English and Hindi newspapers daily, promoting reading comprehension, vocabulary development and public speaking.
A government spokesperson said the initiative seeks to instil a habit of staying informed and engaging with current affairs, thereby supporting students’ all-round development and better preparing them for competitive exams and real-world challenges.
