India is a bright spot for global retail business: dunnhumby CTPO

July 6, 2018

David Jack, chief technology and product officer of UK-based customer data science company dunnhumby, said India is the bright spot for global retail business. With its India team being the top enabler and the Data Science hub for dunnhumby’s growth, the company has grown its global client base by over 25 per cent in just one year. It will be increasing its talent pool in India in the coming months.
Dunnhumby, the world’s first customer data science platform, analyses shopper-behaviour data and uses a unique mix of technology, software and consulting to enable business to deliver exceptional experiences for its customers – in-store, offline and online. Its current clients include Tesco, Coca Cola, P&G and Meijer.

Speaking about the value proposition that dunnhumby offers, Jack said, “I am amazed at how our clients are excited about working with us. The value we bring to our retailers is profound and measurable, and has made them very successful and they are very delighted to not only talk about their success stories but also share their experiences on our platform that will potentially help their competitors.” Jack took over the role of CTPO at dunnhumby last month only and visited India office, to meet the team, and to get to know the work being done from here. Majority of the work is getting delivered from the India office. Prior to taking up this role, he was group CIO at MetaPack.

Speaking on India versus China retail business, Jack stated, “China has large e-commerce businesses and marts; they have aggressive & innovative ideas and their supply side network is of course complex and huge. India remains one of the most enticing opportunities in the world. Not just because of the population size, but because it is a very fast moving dynamic retail environment, that in some areas is leading with innovation. It is a region where we expect to win customers in the future, and I am confident that over time the most important retailers in India will be choosing us as their preferred partner”.

Over the last twelve months, dunnhumby has increased its customer base over 25 percent across industries and regions, including American supercenter chain Meijer and Associated Wholesale Grocers, the largest cooperative food wholesaler in the United States; Chilean retail group SMU; and Thailand’s Cigma Insurance as well as the country’s fifth largest bank, Bank of Ayudhya, and Russia’s second largest food retailer, X5 Retail Group, among many others around the world. To respond to the growing demand, dunnhumby has expanded its global footprint, now with 50 offices in more than 30 countries and more than 2,000 employees. Currently, 25 percent of employees are data scientists, supporting the demand to provide a comprehensive customer data science platform to keep up with the world’s appetite for always-on, 24-7 ubiquitous commerce.

Jack also praised the deep legacy of mathematics in India that provides its talent a strategic advantage than anywhere else in the world. “If we want to target the world’s best mathematicians, statisticians and computational scientists, of course many of them are coming out of India. This talent pool is hugely suited for customer data science and analytics career,” he said.

Headquartered in the UK, dunnhumby is the global leader in Customer Data Science, empowering businesses everywhere to compete and thrive in the modern data-driven economy. Learn more at
