Overview

The Indian School of Mines (ISM) was formally inaugurated on December 9, 1926, by Lord Irwin, the then viceroy of India to address the need of trained manpower related to mining activities in country. Since its inception, ISM has undergone considerable expansion - the Centre of Mining Environment, The Computer Center, The Center Longwall Mine Mechanisation and the departments of applied chemistry, applied physics and applied mathematics were established in between 1975 and 1977. The department of Computer Science and Engineering was added in 1997. It is presently reckoned as a premiere institute of technology education in the country and has been granted the status of a Deemed University under Section 3 of UGC Act, 1956. ISM has been ranked consistently as one of the top engineering institutions in India by the Outlook magazine. It was ranked No.11 in India in the Outlook Engineering Colleges survey of 2012. The college has a dedicated placement cell which boasts a track record of almost 100 percent placement for the last several years with salary as high as 31 lakh per annum.
