Overview

The Institute of Home Economics (IHE), New Delhi is a women’s college of the University of Delhi. Founded in 1961 by Dr. S. Malhan, the founder Director, IHE New Delhi was meant to give women wider educational and professional avenues and went on to become a leading centre for women’s education in the country.

The institute became a constituent college of the University of Delhi in 1969. Since then, the college has expanded. Though it was started as a Home Science college, it has expanded and offers a three-year undergraduate course in Microbiology as well as a four-year integrated course in Elementary education. From the current academic year, the college is offering the three-year B.Sc. (Hons) course in Biochemistry. The Institute originally only offered a two-year Diploma course in Home Science, but then offered regular degree courses at the undergraduate and post-graduate level, a post-graduate diploma course in addition to Ph.D. programmes.

Campus

The IHE campus, housed in a 3.5-acre plot, moved to its present building at Hauz Khas Enclave in 2001.  With the foundation stone being laid by the then President Giani Zail Singh in 1987, the building was inaugurated by the Vice-Chancellor, Delhi University, Prof. Deepak Nayyar in 2001. The campus is well endowed with manicured lawns, spacious lecture theaters and laboratories. The Institute has an All India Charter catering to students from various countries of Asia and Africa. There are about 800 students attending at present.

The college campus houses a computerized library housing over 25,000 resource texts with 4o national and international journal subscriptions. Laboratory facilities for computer, chemistry, physics, biotechnology, microbiology, therapeutic nutrition, clothing construction and apparel designing are available to students on campus. The campus also houses a lecture theatre, conference room and audio studio in addition to classrooms.

The campus is Wi-Fi enabled and also houses a convenience store, a cafeteria and a common room. Sports facilities on campus include a gym, yoga and fitness centre and facilities for basketball and table tennis.

Recent Placement Highlights: the median CTC of recent graduates was recorded at INR 2.5 LPA whereas the highest CTC stood at INR 3.6 LPA. Leading companies who participated in the placement drive included Nestle, Aaj Tak, Zee news and Vistas.

Admission

Undergraduate Admission- B.Sc., B.A.

Selection Criteria: Academic merit in qualifying (10+2) examinations.

Eligibility: 10+2 from a recognised board with a minimum aggregate of 40-50%.

Admission Process:

  • Candidates must apply for admission by registering on the DU UG admission portal and filling the online application form along with the submission of documents and payment of application fees.
  • The university will release a merit list based on marks obtained in 10+2 examinations.
  • Candidates shall be shortlisted based on academic merit in 10+2 exams. Shortlisted candidates meeting the cut-offs may confirm their admission by verifying their documents and paying the fees.

Undergraduate Admission- B.El.Ed.

Selection Criteria: Common entrance exam (CEE) scores.

Eligibility: 10+2 from a recognised board with a minimum aggregate of 50%.

Admission Process:

  • Candidates must apply for admission by registering on the DU UG admission portal and filling the online application form along with the submission of documents and payment of application fees.
  • Candidates have to appear for the common entrance exam (CEE).
  • Candidates shall be shortlisted based on marks obtained in the CEE. Shortlisted candidates may confirm their admission by verifying their documents and paying the fees.

Postgraduate Admission: M.Sc.

Selection Criteria: Entrance exam scores and academic merit.

Eligibility: Bachelor’s degree (B.Sc. compulsory to apply for M.Sc.) in relevant discipline/specialisation from a recognised university with a minimum aggregate of 50-60%.

Admission Process:

  • Candidates must apply for admission by registering on the DU UG admission portal and filling the online application form along with the submission of documents and payment of application fees.
  • Candidates have to appear for the entrance exam, clearing which they shall be offered admission. Candidates applying to M.Sc. Programmes with B.Sc. (Hons.) in Home Science degrees will be shortlisted based on academic merit.
  • Candidates shall be shortlisted based marks obtained in the entrance exam/academic merit. Shortlisted candidates may confirm their admission by verifying their documents and paying the fees.

Postgraduate Admission: PG Diploma

Selection Criteria: Academic merit.

Eligibility: Bachelor’s degree (B.Sc. compulsory to apply for M.Sc.) in relevant discipline/specialisation from a recognised university with a minimum aggregate of 50-55%.

Admission Process:

  • Candidates must apply for admission by registering on the DU UG admission portal and filling the online application form along with the submission of documents and payment of application fees.
  • The university will release a merit list based on academic merit of candidates.
  • Shortlisted candidates meeting the cut-offs may confirm their admission by verifying their documents and paying the fees.

Doctoral Admission: Ph.D.

Selection Criteria: Entrance exam scores.

Eligibility: M.Phil. degree or its equivalent from a recognised university with a minimum aggregate of 50%.

Admission Process:

  • Candidates must apply for admission by registering on the DU UG admission portal and filling the online application form along with the submission of documents and payment of application fees.
  • Candidates have to appear for the entrance exam.
  • Candidates shall be shortlisted based on marks obtained in the entrance exam. Shortlisted candidates may confirm their admission by verifying their documents and paying the fees.
