IPGMER

Overview

Founded in 1957, the Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education & Research (IPGMER), Kolkata was formed from the Presidency Hospital which was the first hospital in Calcutta, having started in 1707 for the Europeans. In 1954, it was rechristened as Seth Sukhlal Karnani Memorial (SSKM) Hospital. Since Indian medical graduates travelled abroad for pursuing post graduation and higher medical research, the government felt the need for starting postgraduate medical education centers. From January 16, 1957, the hospital came to be known as the Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education & Research (IPGMER) and was inaugurated by Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, the then Prime Minister of India. In 2004, IPGMER was upgraded into a medical training institute as well. Earlier, the Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education & Research was affiliated with the University of Calcutta but is now affiliated with the West Bengal University of Health Sciences.

Campus

The Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education & Research (IPGMER) sprawls over 34 acres. The classrooms are spacious, well ventilated and well furnished with good seating capacity. The college library features a good stock of text books, magazines, journals and reference books along with good infrastructure and seating capacity. The library houses a reading room facility for staff and students, internet resources and e-journals. The institute hosts state of the art computer labs which are well equipped with the latest computers and technologies. The labs are well equipped with all the necessary equipments. The college also houses an auditorium, a canteen and facilities for sports and recreation.

Admission

For MBBS The candidates must be passed in Higher Secondary Certificate Examination (10+2) with science subjects (PCB), from any recognized board. The admission procedure is based on the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination (WBJEE), which is conducted by the university. For PG courses For post graduate courses a candidate should have completed MBBS from any recognized university. In order to be eligible to the, Post Doctoral certificate course a candidate should be a member of West Bengal Medical Education Service/ West Bengal Health Service with a postgraduate medical degree from any MCI - recognized institution in India. Application for admission will not be accepted unless the candidate has been registered either with WB Medical Council or with the Medical Council of India. Candidates pursuing any other course are not eligible for admission. The selection of candidates will be done on the basis of the marks obtained in the admission test.
