Jamia Milia Islamia has suspended an assistant professor on Wednesday for allegedly raping a fellow faculty under the pretext of marrying her.
JMI in Delhi suspended the assistant professor following his arrest on charges of allegedly raping a colleague giving her a false pretense of marriage.
In her complaint to the Delhi Police, the victim stated that the assault took place in June of the previous year at Maharani Bagh, two months after she and the accused first met at the university.
According to the police, the two got acquainted in April, and within a fortnight, the accused had initiated contact via LinkedIn and then proposed for a relationship.
Sources suggest that the accused made physical advances under the guise of marriage, and both families even discussed the possibility of a union. However, in October, the engagement talks were abruptly called off after the accused cited mismatched horoscopes and the victim’s father did not approve of the marriage.
The police filed a case under Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and took the accused in custody with the investigations underway.
Jamia Milia Islamia cited its zero-tolerance policy in cases of violence against women. “… it is clarified that the incident of sexual assault happened outside the university and is totally individual and personal. Therefore, JMI does not have anything to do with the alleged incident as it did not happen on the university campus.”
The administration also noted that the accused was a contractual employee, and not a permanent faculty.
