Kala Ka Karawaan highlights arts education for Mumbai’s Government School students

February 21, 2025

Students from Mumbai’s municipal and government-aided schools showcased their creative and media skills at Kala Ka Karawaan, an initiative by the Salaam Bombay Foundation, held at YB Chavan Auditorium. The event demonstrated the role of arts education in skill development through exhibitions, performances, and interactive sessions.

The Arts Academy exhibition featured student work in painting, photography, and digital art, highlighting themes from Indian culture. Meanwhile, the Media Academy set up interactive stalls where students shared their experiences in filmmaking, podcasting, and magazine writing.

The event also included theatre and dance performances, where students used storytelling and movement to address real-world issues and personal experiences.

Alumni success stories were a key focus, with graduates returning to share how they turned their training into careers. Priti Singh, a former Arts Academy student, exhibited her paintings. Sagar Kanojia, once a dance student, returned as a choreographer, and Kushal Mahale, now a professional photographer and video editor, presented his portfolio.

Rajashree Kadam, Senior Vice President (Arts & Media) at Salaam Bombay Foundation, said, “This event shows that when students from disadvantaged backgrounds get the right opportunities, they can achieve real success. Our programs align with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which supports arts and vocational training for overall student development.”

Theatre director Jeff Goldberg noted the impact of arts education, saying, “It’s not just about skills. These students are learning to express themselves and gain confidence.”

BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani added, “Students in municipal schools have great potential. With platforms like these, they can explore opportunities beyond academics. Investing in arts education is essential.”

Kala Ka Karawaan reinforced the importance of integrating arts into education, offering students a space to develop skills and explore creative careers.
