Kerala: Government appeals HC in Madrassa teacher’s murder case

April 3, 2024

The Kerala government has decided to appeal the acquittal of RSS activists in the madrassa teacher murder case. Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Bishwanath Singha stated that the decision to approach the high court was based on legal advice.

The order permits filing an appeal before the High Court of Kerala against the acquittal judgment passed by the Court of Sessions Judge, Kasaragod. The case involves the murder of Mohammed Riyas Maulavi, a 34-year-old muezzin and madrassa teacher, in his room in the mosque on March 20, 2017.

The recent acquittal of three RSS activists by the Kasaragod Principal Sessions Court has drawn criticism. The opposition Congress has been targeting the LDF government during its Lok Sabha poll campaign. They demand a reinvestigation into the case by a high-level police team.

KPCC acting chief M M Hassan echoed these sentiments, suggesting that reinvestigation is necessary as the court highlighted failures in the police and prosecution’s efforts. He questioned the state government’s decision to appeal the verdict, questioning its utility after evidence had been compromised in the trial court.
