Kerala: Student ragged in government college, complaint filed

An incident of ragging, where a junior student was harassed has come to light in Kerala’s Kariavattom Government College, Thiruvananthapuram.

A first-year biotechnology student was assaulted by a group of seven third-year students. The victim, identified as Bins Jose, reported that on February 11, the senior students dragged him into a Students’ Federation of India (SFI) unit room and beat him.

The incident came to light on Monday. Sources said that the senior students asked Bins to kneel before them. When he refused, they thrashed him and forced him to stay on his knees for over 15 minutes. When the student requested water, one of the senior students spat in a bottle of water and forced him to drink it.

“First, they beat me and my friend Abhishek inside the college’s naalukettu. After he ran toward the principal’s office, seven students dragged me into the SFI unit room and assaulted me,” Bins said, adding “They tore my shirt, and I had to remain inside the room without it. They only gave me another shirt later.”

Speaking about the incident, Bin’s father, Jose said that the senior students also confiscated his son’s phone and that he couldn’t contact anyone about the incident.

After the cell’s confirmation, the principal forwarded the complaint to Kazhakkuttom Police. The police, who have registered a case against the seven students based on prior complaints and other incidents of ragging.
