Kerala teacher writes about student who didn’t clear SSLC exam, saying ‘I failed too’

July 6, 2020

A heartwarming social media post by a Kerala school teacher expressing that he failed too along with a lone student who did not clear SSLC exam. Prabhakaran Priyam, the headmaster of the Government Vocational Higher Secondary school at Madappally in Kozhikode, said he called the child instead of the rest 434 who passed. “I feel I failed too along with him,” he said.

The post by the headmaster which has gone viral reads, “We thought no one would fail this time. We gave close attention to students whom we thought required help and those who had trouble in writing alphabets. They have clearly realised the care and love we showered on them. During exams, I have seen the sparkle in their eyes while also enquiring if things were alright. Maybe the son who could not pass the exam, might have also looked at me. But I didn’t see him. He is a child who got missed from our love and care.”

He further said why each student deserves care and attention and highlighted that passing an exam is not a measure of one’s success. The Kerala teacher said that when he called the student, he shared how he was expecting to pass the SSLC exams. The headmaster consoled him saying that a person’s success doesn’t depend on exam results. “What lies between winning and losing? Maybe we lacked in our care for our students. All of us teachers have failed with him. Maybe in re-evaluation or in the SAY (Save A Year) exam, he might pass… Many people who failed in several exams have still succeeded in their lives. I told him, ‘It’s okay, you come to school tomorrow’. He then said softly, “I will come sir”. Across the telephone, I could clearly see his face,” he concluded.

The post went viral with netizens praising the teacher for keeping hope alive in the student. An user commented how can one lose when there are people like him. Another wrote, “This is what he is going to learn and learn.. when he reaches high level.. then he will also say.. my master brought me here… Congratulations teacher..” Yet another user added, “Even though he lost the exam.. Sir was there to get together.. That’s enough for him to not lose in his life.”
