A fourth-year student at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur was found dead in his hostel room on Sunday night. Twenty-two year old student identified as Aniket Walker who hailed from Maharashtra was a student of the institute’s Jagadish Chandra Bose Hostel.
The cause of the death is yet to be confirmed. Local Kharagpur Town Police Station started an unnatural death case. They said preliminary investigations revealed it is a case of suicide. According to the police they were waiting for the postmortem to confirm the actual cause of the death.
According to sources in the institute, his classmates claimed that Walker’s room was locked from inside. They knocked the door but there was no response. They alerted the security and police and after they broke opened the door and found his body hanging from the ceiling. Walker was pursuing his degree in Ocean Engineering and Naval Architecture
The incident that shocked the entire community of the institute is the second suicide on the campus in a gap of barely a few months after the death of 21-year old Sawan Malik, a third-year student of electrical engineering department who was also found hanging in his room in January.
The institute informed the campus community about the student’s death today in an email where it urged studengs to seek counselling support in case they needed.
