The University of Lucknow, which is probably the only educational institution in the county offering a graduation-level astronomy program, is gearing up to revamp its planetarium and bolster astronomy education starting from the academic session of 2023-24.
The esteemed university is taking steps to secure government grants by submitting a proposal to relevant agencies to kickstart the renovation process.
According to Lucknow University (LU) spokesperson Durgesh Srivastava, the university takes pride in being the sole educational institution in the county offering a graduation-level astronomy program. In order to provide students with the finest facilities, LU is devising a comprehensive plan to revitalize and restore the existing planetarium.
The astronomy department at LU has produced several distinguished alumni, including notable scientists at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) such as SP Ojha, Mohammad Hasan, and Shishir Sankhyan, who have achieved remarkable success at the Tartu Observatory in Estonia. These achievements stand as a testament to the exceptional quality of education imparted by LU’s astronomy program.
Upon completion of the planetarium’s renovation, students will have the opportunity to observe constellations, study seasonal sky patterns, and stay informed about upcoming astronomical events through advanced projection systems. The enhanced facilities will undoubtedly augment the learning experience and foster a deeper understanding of the captivating realm of astronomy.
LU’s initiative to restore the planetarium and elevate the standard of astronomy education demonstrates the university’s commitment to providing its students with the best possible resources. By equipping them with cutting-edge tools and immersive learning environments, LU aims to nurture a new generation of astronomers and scientific pioneers.
The proposal submitted by Lucknow University to secure grants for the renovation signifies a crucial step towards realizing this vision. With the potential support from government agencies, LU can unlock the transformative power of a revamped planetarium, paving the way for future breakthroughs in astronomical education and research.
