The Maharashtra government has nullified its order on implementing the three-language policy in schools following widespread protests against the perceived imposition of Hindi. Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis announced the formation of a committee, chaired by Dr. Narendra Jadhav, educationist and public policy expert, to examine and take a decision regarding the issue.
Chief minister Fadnavis said that till such time as the report of the committee is submitted, the state government’s orders dated 16 April 2025 and 17 June 2025 regarding the third language are cancelled.
It is pertinent to note that the Marathi language is compulsory in all schools across the state.
The chief minister also said that the issue would be discussed in the monsoon session of the legislature which opened today. He said that the state government has proposed a three-week session of detailed discussions to resolve public issues. A total of 12 bills will be introduced in this session, one pending bill and one bill from the joint committee will be discussed and six ordinances, tabled.
