Marathi to Be Compulsory in Urdu Schools from 2025-26: Minority Commission

March 11, 2025

The Maharashtra State Minority Commission has announced that Marathi will be a mandatory subject from Class I in Urdu schools, starting from the 2025-26 academic year. Additionally, the commission has proposed regularizing temporary Marathi teachers, a move aimed at strengthening Marathi education in these institutions, chairperson Pyare Khan said on Monday.

The proposals have already been submitted to the state education department for implementation. Khan made the announcement following a discussion with teachers from the Marathi Foundation in Nagpur, where concerns were raised about the declining number of Marathi teachers in Urdu schools and the impact on students’ learning.

According to Khan, the number of Marathi teachers in Urdu schools has drastically reduced, from 4,500 to just 500, affecting the quality of Marathi language education. He emphasized the need for systematic reforms to ensure that students in Urdu schools receive adequate exposure to Marathi, the official language of Maharashtra.

“The implementation of mandatory Marathi instruction and the regularization of temporary Marathi teachers will begin in the 2025-26 academic session,” Khan stated.

The move is expected to improve language inclusivity and help students integrate better into the state’s broader educational and professional landscape. The commission is optimistic that these changes will enhance linguistic diversity and ensure better educational outcomes for students in Urdu schools.
