Meghalaya CM urges Pradhan to address the ongoing NEHU student protests

November 11, 2024

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Sunday reached out to Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan to seek a resolution for the ongoing student protests at North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), which have affected the university’s normal functioning for five days. The students, demanding the removal of the registrar and deputy registrar, are also calling for the resignation of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Prabha Shankar Shukla, accusing him of mismanagement. The protests have caused disruption for the nearly 5,000 students at NEHU.

Alongside the student protests, NEHU faculty members have also approached Meghalaya Governor CH Vijayashankar, the university’s chief rector, to intervene. In response, the Governor expressed concern and directed that all stakeholders submit suggestions to resolve the situation. Prof. Lakhon Kma, president of the NEHU Teachers Association, confirmed that the Governor is actively engaged and seeking input from various groups to end the crisis.

Despite the efforts of Vice-Chancellor Shukla to convene an Executive Committee meeting, the protests continue, preventing normal university operations. The Vice-Chancellor has assured the students that an inquiry will take place and actions will be taken based on the report. He also urged students to end the protest so that the university can return to normal. Additionally, Shukla confirmed plans to appoint pro-vice chancellors for both the Tura and Shillong campuses by month-end as per university regulations. The government is working to address the concerns raised while minimizing the disruption to students’ academic pursuits.
