Overview

The National Academy of Legal Studies and Research, i.e, NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad is a National Law University located in Shamirpet, Telangana. It is a public autonomous law school and one of the first universities in the nation to offer the five-year BA LLB (Hons.) course. Established in 1998 by a statute of the state of Andhra Pradesh, the university offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs in law and postgraduate programs in business administration.

Since its inception, the university has been home to vital conversations on law and justice, and is committed to the creation of an ethical legal culture, which protects and promotes the rule of law. NALSAR is counted amongst the top law schools of the country. In accord with its liberal outlook, legal education is imparted in an inter-disciplinary manner. Consequently, there is convergence between the disciplines of law, social sciences, humanities, and management studies in both developing and executing the curriculum in the various degree and diploma courses.

Campus

The NALSAR University is sited on a 55-acre plot in Justice City, Hyderabad. The main building houses the Administrative Block, Academic Block, Library, Computer Centre, and M.K. Nambyar SAARC Law Centre. Residential facility on the campus includes four hostel blocks for boys and four hostel blocks for girls, three blocks for faculty quarters comprising 12 units, vice-chancellor’s residence and a guest house. Two more hostel blocks for students are being constructed apart from an auditorium with 22 air-conditioned rooms and 3 suits.

Students can open accounts with the Indian Bank branch in Shameerpet village. An ATM counter is available on the campus.

The university has its own Health Care Centre one Male Medical Officer, Female Medical Officer and a Resident Nurse. A psychiatrist also visits the campus once a weak for counseling the students. In case of serious ailments, on the advice of the doctor, facilities are provided for admittance in hospitals in the twin-cities for timely attention and care. The Hospital expenditure in such cases are borne by the students or their parents. Ambulance facility is also provided round the clock for the students in case of medical emergency.

A stadium with state-of-the-art facilities, two tennis courts, and play fields for various sports comprise the sports facilities on the campus. A gymnasium and a swimming pool are also in the pipeline.

Placements:

NALSAR is partnered with both leading as well as upcoming organisations where legal skills developed in law school can be tested and honed by our students. The institution’s vision is not only about continuing and strengthening the relationship with our existing recruiters whilst striving to expand our recruitment base by also forging conversations with organisations and people who have not recruited before. In doing so, our aim is to cater to the diverse interests of our students by reaching out to not merely corporate entities and law firms but also to legal practitioners, law and policy research organisations and also various fellowships.

Campus placement for undergraduate students at NALSAR is largely managed by a body of students with each outgoing batch electing its own Recruitment Co-ordination Committee (RCC). The students who subscribe to the RCC contribute to its funds for financing its activities. The RCC liaisons with the existing and prospective recruiters based on the interests of its subscribers.

Campus recruitments for postgraduate students is managed by the LL.M. recruitment coordination committee (LRCC) which is a student body nominated/elected from among the students who wish to join the recruitment process. The committee aims to cater to the varied interests of students coming with different specialisations branches like Corporate Laws, International trade & business laws and IPR. The continuous association with the existing and future recruiters backed by a strong network of alumni across various organizations has helped in maintaining a remarkable track record of campus placements for LL.M students.

Recent placement highlights- 2020: NALSAR witnessed a total of 120 student recruitments in 2020- 75 B.A. LL.B. students and 45 LL.M. students. The median CTC for B.A. LL.B. students was recorded at INR 16.5 LPA, while that for LL.M. students stood at INR 8.5 LPA. Top recruiters included Allen & Overy LLP, Trilegal, ICICI Bank, Linklaters LLP, L & L Partners Law Offices and AZB & Partners. Some candidates were also selected to study abroad at prestigious institutions such as the University of Cambridge, University of Oxford, Cornell Law School, University of Chicago Law School, University of Pennsylvania Law School & New York University.

Admission

B.A. LL.B. and LL.M. Admission

Selection criteria: Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) scores.

Eligibility for B.A. LL.B.: The candidate should have passed 10+2 or equivalent examination with a minimum aggregate of 45% marks (40% for reserved categories) and should not be more than 20 years.

Eligibility for LL.M.: The candidate should have passed the LL.B./B.L. Degree or an equivalent Degree from a recognized university a minimum aggregate of 55% marks (50% for reserved categories).

Admission procedure:

  • Candidates need to apply for admissions by filling out the online application form from the NALSAR website along with the submission of required documents and payment of application fees.
  • Candidates must apply and appear for the CLAT exams and secure a valid score.
  • Candidates will be shortlisted based on their CLAT scores according to the CLAT merit list.
  • Shortlisted candidates have to appear for counselling for seat allocation, where they can verify documents and pay the fees to confirm their admission.

Postgraduate Admission- M.B.A.

Selection criteria: CAT/GMAT/GRE scores.

Eligibility: Graduation in relevant stream from a recognised university with a minimum aggregate of 60% marks (55% for reserved categories).

Admission procedure:

  • Candidates need to apply for admissions by filling out the online application form from the NALSAR website along with the submission of required documents and payment of application fees.
  • Candidates have to apply and appear for the CAT/GMAT/GRE exams and secure a valid score.
  • Candidates shall be shortlisted on the basis of their CAT/GMAT/GRE merit. Shortlisted candidates will have to appear for counselling for seat allocation, where they can verify documents and pay the fees to confirm their admission.

Postgraduate Admission- PG Diploma

Selection criteria: SOP exam merit and performance in group discussion and private interview.

Eligibility: Graduation in relevant stream from a recognised university with a minimum aggregate of 50% marks (45% for reserved categories) OR a three-year degree/diploma in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering with a minimum of three years of experience.

Admission procedure:

  • Candidates need to apply for admissions by filling out the online application form from the NALSAR website along with the submission of required documents and payment of application fees.
  • Candidates have to appear and qualify for the SOP exam. This is followed by a group discussion and personal interview round.
  • A merit list will be released based on the candidate’s SOP qualification and performance in group discussion and personal interview. Shortlisted candidates may verify documents and pay the fees to confirm their admission.

Doctoral Admission- Ph.D. and M.Phil.

Selection criteria: Merit in written admission test and performance in interview.

Eligibility: LL.M. degree from a recognised university with a minimum aggregate of 50% marks.

Admission procedure:

  • Candidates need to apply for admissions by filling out the online application form from the NALSAR website along with the submission of required documents and payment of application fees.
  • Candidates have to appear for a written admission test. Candidates with UGC NET/JRF/SLET/M.Phil. qualifications may be exempt from the written test.
  • Candidates qualifying the admission test will have to submit a preliminary research proposal, which will be followed by an interview round and presentation of proposals to the research committee.
  • Candidates clearing all rounds of selection (written test, proposal submission and presentation and interview) will be offered admission. Shortlisted candidates may verify documents and pay the fees to confirm their admission.

Accommodation

NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad provides accommodation facilities via campus hostels with a maximum occupancy of 286 men and 251 women. Rooms are available for single as well as double occupants, while hostels are equipped with common rooms, reading areas, housekeeping services, telephone, electrical and plumbing facilities and cable connections.
