Established in March 1891, National Archives of India, an edifice of Lutyen’s Delhi at the intersection of Rajpath and Janpath is the sentinel of nation’s documentary heritage. It has been conducting training courses in archives keeping since 1941.
The Institute of Archival Training was set up in National Archives of India in 1976 and was renamed as School of Archival Studies in 1980. It was established to meet the demand of trained custodians of archival and library wealth. The school conducts theory and practical classes to train archivists, record managers, preservationists and microphotographists. The training programme is supplemented by seminars, workshops and extension lectures by eminent archivists, preservationists and microphotographists from leading institutions and universities.

One year diploma course:
Also called as the Diploma course in Archives and Records Management, it is a training program of 1 year duration and starts in the month of November each year. The course consists of four core papers and the student also has to opt for one optional/specialization paper as part of the course. The curriculum also includes writing of dissertation by the trainees on the basis of archival material.

The course is planned to make the trainees aware of acquisition, arrangement, upkeep and retrieval of records.
Eligibility:
Graduate in any discipline from a recognized university and should be below 30 years in age for private candidates, no age limit for sponsored candidates.
Duration: 6 weeks (session: February – March)
Registration fee: Rs. 25/- (Rupees twenty five) for Indian trainees and U.S.$ 25.00 (twenty five U.S. dollars) for foreign trainees.
Course fee: Rs.300/- for Indian trainees and U.S.$300.00 for foreign trainees.
Selection procedure: Entirely on the basis of merit (marks basis) as per the above mentioned eligibility requirement.
Records Management:
The course is to train the trainees in creation, control and disposition of records.
Eligibility: Graduate in any discipline from a recognized university and should be below 30 years in age for private candidates, no age limit for sponsored candidates.
Duration: 4 weeks (May and September)
Registration fee: Rs.25/- (Rupees twenty five) for Indian candidates and US$25.00 for foreign candidates.
Course fee: Rs.200/- (Rupees two hundred) for Indian trainees and US$200.00 for foreign trainees.

Reprography:
The course is designed to train personnel in the process of reproduction of documents and manuscripts, in microfilming, handling of automated information storage, retrieval and dissemination.
Eligibility: Second class graduates from a recognized university, preferably in science and should be below 30 years in age for private candidates, no age limit for sponsored candidates.
Duration: 6 weeks (April-May and September-October)
Registration fee: Rs.25/- (Rupees twenty five) for Indian candidates and US$25.00 for foreign candidates.

Care and Conservation of Books, Manuscripts and Archives
The course is designed to train personnel in the scientific methods of conservation, repair, rehabilitation, storage and handling of documentary heritage.
Eligibility: Second class graduates from a recognized university, preferably in science and should be below 30 years in age for private candidates, no age limit for sponsored candidates.
Duration: 8 weeks (July-August and November-December)
Registration fee: Rs.25/- (Rupees twenty five) for Indian candidates and US$25.00 for foreign candidates.

Servicing and Repair of Records
To train trainees in arrangement, supply, restoration and upkeep of records.
Eligibility:- High School pass, knowledge of English/ Hindi and should be below 50 years in age.
Duration:- 6 weeks, Session: May-June and September-October.
Registration fee:- Rs. 25/- (Rupees Twenty Five) for Indian trainees and US @ 25.00 (Twenty Five US dollars) for foreign trainees.
Course fee:- Rs. 300/- for Indian trainees and US $ 300.00 for foreign trainees.

Eligibility: M.A (History) second class (with minimum 50% marks in aggregate) with one optional paper in Modern Indian History (Post 1750 AD) from recognized university.
M.A. in other streams of social sciences, i.e. anthropology, economics, political science, sociology, linguistics, etc with minimum 50% marks from a recognized university.
M.Sc in applied/physical sciences with minimum 50% marks from a recognized university
Total number of available seats is 30 out of which 10 seats are reserved for candidates having Masters degree in history, 10 seats for post graduates in other streams i.e. M.A. in social sciences, M.Sc in applied/physical sciences, etc and 10 seats are reserved for sponsored candidates.
The application fee is Rs 100 and the course fee is Rs 1500.
