The National Institute of Technology, Durgapur was founded in 1960 as Regional Engineering College, Durgapur by an Act of Parliament. It is a fully residential, co-educational, premier technological institution funded by the Government of India and is administered by an autonomous Board of Governors. The institute is located about 160 km north-west of Kolkata on the Howrah-Delhi main railway route, overlooking the national highway no. 2. The placement office of the institute interacts with over 150 industries in the country, of which nearly 50 companies from core engineering industries, software/IT industries, manufacturing industries and consultancy firms, among others visit the institute campus every year.
