National Institute of Technology Hamirpur is one of the 30 National Institutes of Technology spread across the country. Established in 1986 as Regional Engineering College (a joint and cooperative enterprise of the Government of India and Government of Himachal Pradesh), the institute was upgraded to an NIT in 2002 and enjoys an autonomous status. It provides undergraduate, postgraduate and doctorate level programmes in Engineering, Architecture, Sciences and Humanities through its eleven departments – Architecture, Civil Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Electronics & Communication Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, Humanities & Social Science and Mathematics. All the courses are approved by the New-Delhi based All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE). The institute has been declared as an Institute of National Importance by an Act of the Parliament in 2007. NIT Hamirpur also has its own Training and Placement cell which offers students career guidance programmes, conducts mock interview sessions, organizes entrepreneurship promotion programmes, arranges internships for students with leading firms in the industry, prepares them for GRE, GMAT and GATE and also arranges on and off-campus recruitments. Recruiters who frequent NIT Hamirpur campus include Samsung India Ltd., Amdocs, Alcatel, Huawei Technologies India Pvt. Ltd, Larson & Toubro Construction, IBM Corporation, Tata Consultancy Services, ICICI, Ashok Leyland Ltd, and B.H.E.L amongst many others. Statistics show 90 percent of students from NITH are successfully placed with multinational companies every year.
