NMIMS Bengaluru aims to go plastic free, formulates 5 year-plan towards sustainability

June 7, 2023

NMIMS Bengaluru, to mark the World Environment Day, has announced initiatives to minimise the use of single use plastic and go environment friendly and combat pollution.

The initiative is undertaken by Udyam, a student body and the campus’ social responsibility club. Under the mission of ‘Zero Single-use Plastics’ the “Udyam” team 2023 has planned a series of activities throughout the year to create awareness and promote sustainable alternatives.

These initiatives encompass awareness campaigns, plastic reduction challenges, competitions for viable alternatives to single-use plastics, advocacy for plastic-free events, and engaging workshops and panel discussions featuring renowned experts and environmental activists.

A comprehensive five-year transformation plan has been designed to achieve a fully green campus, focusing on three core themes: Water Conservation, Clean Energy, and Recycling according to college authorities.

The shift focusses on switch to renewable energy sources, with a particular emphasis on solar energy. Embracing sustainable transportation practices, including campus buses, carpooling, and cab pooling, is encouraged to minimise the carbon footprint.

Dr Narayani Ramachandran, Deputy Director, NMIMS Bengaluru, said, “The conscious initiative by Udyam marks a significant milestone in our journey towards a greener future. Plastic pollution poses a grave threat to our planet, and it is our responsibility to take action. Through this project, we aim to inspire change, empower our community, and create a lasting impact. By embracing sustainable practices and promoting viable alternatives, we can collectively work towards a world free from single- use plastics.”

Prof Janaki Anant, Adjunct Associate Professor, NMIMS Bengaluru and the faculty

Mentor of “Udyam”, said, “This seemingly simple mission requires a mental shift from convenience to conscious consumption.”
