Nilratan Sarkar (NRS) Medical College & Hospital was founded in 1873 in Kolkata as Sealdah Medical School. In 1884 it was rechristened as Campbell Medical School and later in June 1948, it was upgraded to Campbell Medical College. In 1950, the college was rechristened as Nilratan Sircar Medical College after the great freedom fighter and alumni of the college. Affiliated with the West Bengal University of Health Sciences, it is one of the four government medical colleges in Kolkata. The hospital associated with the college has a bed strength of 2000.
The college library covers an area of 12,000 sq. ft. and is designed to serve as a Central Medical Library. Other facilities include spacious classrooms, staff quarters, lecture theatre, seminar hall, hostel and hospital. There is also a playground for the students. A medical teachers’ training center has been set up in the academic block of the college.
