Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences (NTRUHS) was established in 1986, as the first university of health sciences in the state after a number of committees had given their recommendations for doing so. The Andhra Pradesh University of Health Sciences was established by the Act 6 of the Andhra Pradesh Legislature.
The state government of Andhra Pradesh rechristened the University in 1998 and it was named after its founder Sri N. T. Rama Rao. Eventually, it started operating as Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences, Andhra Pradesh from 2nd February, 1998. The principal objectives of the university was to improve the standards of medical education, including research and implementing uniform curriculum in all courses. In the initial period, the office of the NTRUHS shared its campus with Siddhartha Medical College building and the university functioned in that limited space till March, 2002. However, it was shifted into its present building in April, 2002.
NTRUHS is accredited by the Medical Council of India (MCI)and offers the Bachelor Degree in Ayurvedic Medicine & Surgery (BAMS) which is a 5 years and 6 months course of study.
