A lecturer in Odisha, who was reportedly assaulted by one of his students in February, has tragically lost his life after an eight-month-long battle at a hospital, according to his family members.
The deceased, Amit Barik, was working as a lecturer at PKSS Degree College in the Katapalli area of Jharsuguda district. The accused in this case is a degree student from the same college.
The incident originated from the accused student’s habit of consistently arriving late to class. On February 22, when the student arrived late once again, Amit Barik instructed him to meet with the principal before entering the classroom. This instruction led to a confrontation between them, during which the angered student physically assaulted the teacher in front of the entire class, using his bare hands, as reported by Anirush Barik, a family member of the deceased lecturer.
During this incident, Amit Barik sustained severe head injuries. He was initially admitted to Jharsuguda district headquarters hospital and later transferred to VIMSAR, Burla, where he succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday night. Anirush Barik also mentioned that the lecturer had his wedding plans in place before this incident occurred.
Upon receiving information about the assault, local authorities arrested the accused student on the same day and presented him before the court. He is currently out on bail, as confirmed by Jharsuguda Sub-divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Nirmal Mohapatra.
Following the news of the lecturer’s passing during treatment, law enforcement intends to approach the court to change the charges from Section 307 (attempt to murder) to Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Further actions will be taken in accordance with the court’s directives.
